Chinese Language
Vision
Every Chinese Language student, an active learner with the passion for the language and culture.
Mission
Developing effective communicators who appreciate the Chinese language and culture.
Key Programmes
Xinmin’s Mother Tongue Language (MTL) curriculum places a strong emphasis on developing students into confident and effective communicators through meaningful verbal and written interactions. Through a range of authentic and engaging programmes, students are encouraged to demonstrate curiosity in their learning, take responsibility for their progress, and develop adaptive thinking as they apply language skills across different contexts. These experiences bring the language to life and nurture a deeper appreciation of both the language and its cultural richness.
Speech and Drama Programme (Primary 1 & 2)
Our Primary 1 and 2 students participate in a Speech and Drama programme that provides meaningful opportunities for self-expression through role-play, storytelling and performance. As students explore sounds, words and characters, they develop curiosity towards language use while building confidence in expressing their thoughts clearly. Through active participation and attentive listening, they take responsibility for their learning, and begin to experiment with different ways of communicating ideas, responding to feedback to improve their expression.
MT SOAR Reading Programme (Primary 1 to 3)
Primary 1 to 3 students engage in dedicated reading and library sessions using age-appropriate supplementary readers, alongside digital resources such as Little Readers on the Student Learning Space (SLS) platform. As they explore a variety of texts, students develop curiosity by asking questions and making connections to their own experiences. Regular reading routines both in school and at home encourage them to take responsibility for their learning, while discussions with teachers and parents support them in applying new vocabulary and ideas in different contexts. This programme also strengthens the partnership between home and school through meaningful shared reading experiences.
Class Reading Programme (Primary 4 to 6)
Primary 4 to 6 students engage in more in-depth reading experiences through guided discussions and structured learning activities. As they analyse texts and explore themes, students demonstrate curiosity by examining different perspectives and interpretations. They take responsibility for their learning by contributing thoughtfully to discussions and building on the ideas of others. Through these interactions, students develop adaptive thinking as they evaluate viewpoints, justify their responses and apply their language skills across a range of contexts.
Thumbs Up Junior Sharing (Primary 1 to 3)
Students participate in regular sharing sessions using Thumbs Up Junior materials. Exposure to a wide range of topics beyond the textbook sparks students’ curiosity about the world around them, while encouraging them to ask questions and seek deeper understanding. Through active participation in discussions, students take responsibility for their learning and build confidence in expressing their ideas. They also develop adaptive thinking as they respond to their peers, refine their viewpoints and communicate their thoughts more effectively.
Cultural Exposure Performance (Primary 4)
Primary 4 students attend cultural exposure performances that showcase traditional Chinese arts such as music, dance and theatre. These experiences stimulate students’ curiosity about cultural expressions and their meanings, while encouraging them to reflect on the connections between language and culture. Through attentive engagement, students take responsibility for their learning and deepen their appreciation of Chinese heritage, while developing the ability to make meaningful connections across different contexts.
Mother Tongue Fortnight & Cultural Camps (Primary 3 & 5)
Our Cultural Fortnight and Camp provide an immersive platform for students to experience Chinese traditions through hands-on and collaborative activities. Primary 3 students are introduced to cultural elements through guided and exploratory experiences that spark curiosity and build foundational awareness, while Primary 5 students engage in more complex tasks that require them to investigate cultural meanings more deeply. Throughout the camps, students take responsibility for their learning by working collaboratively, communicating actively in their Mother Tongue Language and contributing to group tasks. As they navigate new situations, they develop adaptive thinking by applying their language skills in authentic contexts, adjusting their communication for different purposes and reflecting on their learning experiences. These camps foster both cultural appreciation and confidence in using the language meaningfully.
Library Visits (Primary 1 to 6)
Students attend regular library sessions where they engage in sustained silent reading within a structured and conducive environment. As they explore a range of texts, students develop curiosity and a growing appreciation for Chinese literature. They take responsibility for their learning by building disciplined reading habits and making independent choices in selecting texts. Over time, they also develop adaptive thinking as they reflect on what they read, make connections to prior knowledge and apply their learning in new contexts
